Dr. Antao Chen is a Senior Scientist with the Applied Physics Laboratory and an Associate Professor with the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Washington.

Dr. Chen received his BS, MEng degrees from Beijing Institute of Technology, and MS and PhD degrees from the University of Southern California, in 1983, 1989, 1995, and 1998, respectively.

From 1983 to 1986, he worked as a lens designer for State Northwestern Optical Instrument Corporation in Xi'an, China. From 1989 to 1993, he was an engineer with the Chinese Academy of Electronics and Information Technology in Beijing, China. Dr. Chen joined Lucent Bell Labs Optoelectronics Center in 1998. His work on lithium niobate optical switches won the 1999 Bell Labs President Gold Award. His another work, a lithium niobate polarization controller, was selected by Photonics Spectra as one of the top 25 photonics products of year 2001, and won the Photonics Circle of Excellence Award. Dr. Chen joined University of Washington in 2004 as a senior staff scientist and associate professor.

In his spare time, he likes to swim, scuba dive, do household repairs and play with his kid and with his radio controlled airplanes, boats, and cars.
